This question came to me this past week when i was at school (SLCC). Mike, my buddy and I was in the coffee shop and in there they have a big screen TV that was given to the college and almost ever night they show movies. Now the rule as I know it is that they can watch movies as long as they are PG-13 and under.
Now to let you know i love movies and i love to watch moives in the coffee house but over the years i have find some issues with this rule of theirs.
1st: for the longest time they would not show "The Passion of the Christ" because it was rated R. Ok, i know it breaks the "PG-13 rule but come on. IT'S A CHRISTIAN COLLEGE!!! Over time it became ok to show it but i think i only seen played once.
2nd: If something is PG-13 it still should not be shown at a Christian College. The other night Mike and I where in there and they were showing the movie Avatar. Now don't get me wrong, i loved this movie when i went to see it in 3D but this is not a movie that should have been oked to play and let me tell you why;
Now just as i was in the coffee shop in the movie you have one of the actors say, "I did not sing up for this s*#t. Now i have heard this word before, i mean come on i have said it, but do you think it should be said at a Christian School. Now Mike and I left the coffee shop and made it known that we were not happy with what we just heard, so i dont know if the main boss of the coffee shop, who was watching the movie turned it off, but i dont think they did. i decided to go out and rent the movie to see if this was a one word thing or if it was worst. now like i said i have seen this movie when it was in 3D but i could not remember.
Now as i started to watch this movie, within the first 13mins Avatar use the big bad word in the Christian faith, they used the GD word. Now i believe that once this word was said, this movie had been shut off and it was way before the s&#t word.
Now as i was seating around thinking about this whole thing, the questions came to my mind, What Movies Should I watch as a Christian?
Now over the years i have talk to people about this and really the only people that have said anything about not watching bad movies are pastors and their familys. A lot of christian i have talked to that live their day to day and attend church most Sundays and Wednesdays never really mind watching movies with killing and cursing and even sex. Now is this ok? Now i am not perfect so don't think I'm am trying to beat up people or think i am better then them because i watch those types of movies to, i really like Rob Zombie movies so...
But something changed in me as well in the past 3 almost 4 years, i had kids. I did not want to subject my Kids to the type of stuff that i would watch in my day to day life. I started to keep an eye on what was on and i also started to keep my ears open to what was on the radio. My youth have joked at me over the years because one of my set stations in my car is radio Disney and i like it.
But the point i am trying to make is that when we give our life to Christ we are saying that we are a new creation and the old has passed away. There was an old saying; "Would you watch that with you Pastor?" Well the question i have is would you watch that with Jesus? Because He is always with us and He knows what we are watching. so maybe as Christians we should watch something that more family friendly.
that's all i have to say, take or leave it, but remember God loves you.
